METHODS TO PREVENT DENGUE FEVER

The best method to avoid the disease is to avoid mosquito bites, especially if you live in or visit to a tropical area. This essentially takes precautions and making attempts to reduce the mosquito population. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized Dengvaxia, a vaccine, in 2019 to help prevent the disease in youths aged 9 to 16 who have already been infected with dengue. However, there is presently no vaccination available to protect the general public from receiving it.


PREVENT MOSQUITO BITE

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that the vaccination is not an effective strategy in reducing dengue fever in places where the disease is widespread on its own. The major techniques for preventing the development of dengue fever are still avoiding mosquito bites and decreasing the mosquito population. If you lived in or go to a disease area, the following actions may help lower your risk of mosquito bites:




Stay in air-conditioned or screened-in accommodations

The mosquitoes that transmit dengue viruses are most active from dawn to dusk, although they can bite at any time of day or night.

Sleep Under a Mosquito Net

Sleeping under a mosquito net can give you and your children with a second layer of protection from mosquito bites.

Put on protective clothes.

Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks, and shoes while going into mosquito-infested areas.

Use insect spray.

Permethrin may be used to treat your clothing, shoes, camping equipment, and bed netting. You may also buy clothes that already contains permethrin. 

Reduce Mosquito Population 

Mosquitoes that spread the dengue virus generally stay in and near houses, reproducing in standing water that can collect in items such as abandoned car tires. You may assist reduce mosquito populations by removing places where they lay their eggs. Empty and clean items that retain standing water, such as planting pots, animal bowls, and flower vases, at least once a week. Between cleanings, keep standing water containers covered.
